The repression that Catalan people are suffering is unprecedented in a 21st-century Europe that calls itself democrat. The case of Catalonia is today and without a doubt the shame of Europe. But the strong will and persistence of these peaceful people to defend their culture and their right to self-determination without going through violence is also extraordinary and exemplary.
The constant offences that the Catalan people receive from Spanish government are incessant and flagrant. Many of their rulers have been imprisoned or have been exiled, and the censorship has reached extremes as hilarious as the prohibition of yellow symbols.
And it is in this political and social context of the Catalan people where Werens develops his most vindicated work of recent times. The work that he is exhibiting today, “Yellow Flowers”, is a collection dedicated to this people, who go out to the streets one day after another to fight for his dignity with a unique weapon: yellow bows.

Die Unterdrückung des katalanischen Volkes ist in einem Europa des 21. Jahrhunderts, das als demokratisch bezeichnet wird, beispiellos. Der Fall Kataloniens ist bis heute und ohne jeden Zweifel die Schande Europas. Aber der starke Wille und die Beharrlichkeit dieser friedlichen Menschen, ihre Kultur und ihr Recht auf Selbstbestimmung zu verteidigen, ohne auf Gewalt zurückzugreifen, ist außergewöhnlich und vorbildlich.
Die ständigen Kränkungen, die das katalanische Volk seitens der spanischen Regierung erhält, sind konstant und eklatant. Viele seiner politischen Führer wurden eingesperrt oder verbannt, und die Zensur ist so extrem geworden, dass sogar gelbe Symbole verboten wurden.
Und in diesem politischen und sozialen Zusammenhang des katalanischen Volkes entwickelt Werens seine augenfälligste Arbeit in letzter Zeit. Diese, die heute und hier ausgestellt wird, „Gelbe Blumen“, ist eine Sammlung, die ihren Leuten gewidmet ist, die einen Tag nach dem anderen auf die Straßen gehen und mit einer einzigen Waffe, den gelben Schleifen, für ihre Würde kämpfen.
